Function
The starting and charging system transmits the energy necessary for
vehicle to start and the proper operation of the electrical system.
Starting Motor
Function
The function of the starter, when activated by the ignition key,
is to crank the engine.
Maintenance
There are three possible causes for an inoperative starter:
- mechanical wear or breakage
- failure of electrical connection cables, etc.
- weak battery
In case of wear or breakage, it will be difficult or impossible
to start the vehicle. Replacement is required.
Alternator
Function
The alternator has a double function: it provides the energy required
for the proper operation of the vehicle's electric and electronic
systems and recharges the battery. It also converts mechanical energy
in to electrical energy.
Maintenance
A warning light located on the instrument panel will indicate most
alternator malfunctions. A malfunction can lead to poor performance
of the electric and electronic systems or cause the vehicle's electrical
system to break down.
Battery
Function
The battery has a double function:
- it supplies the energy required to crank the engine;
- it assists the alternator in supplying power to the electric and
electronic circuits of the vehicle.
Maintenance
The battery condition is crucial point to check when performing
charging and starting system maintenance. A poorly maintained battery
can cause charging and starting system problems.
The service life of a battery is approximately 4 years.
